Your AI Connector Docs

Facebook Messenger

Automate your Facebook Page’s Messenger conversations with the platform. Receive messages in a unified inbox, respond with an AI Agent, and monitor post comments for engagement opportunities.

Prerequisites

Before connecting Facebook Messenger to the platform, make sure you have:

  • A Facebook Page for your business
  • A Meta Business account (business.facebook.com) with admin access to the Page
  • Admin or editor access to the Facebook Page

Note: Personal Facebook profiles cannot be connected — only Facebook Pages are supported.

Before You Connect: Connection Gotcha

Turn off any native automated greeting or “Away message” Meta lets you set inside your Facebook Page’s Inbox settings before connecting the channel. Meta lets only one app “own” automated messaging on a given Page at a time, and Meta’s own native greetings outrank third-party apps. If you leave the native greeting on, AI replies will be blocked or arrive after Meta’s canned greeting reaches the contact first.

To disable it, open your Facebook Page, go to Inbox > Automations (or Meta Business Suite > Inbox > Automated responses), and turn off any active Instant reply, Away message, or Greeting automation. Once the channel is connected, your AI Agent will handle all automated responses for you.

Connecting Messenger to the App

Facebook Messenger uses the same connection process as Instagram. If you have already connected your Instagram account, Messenger may already be available.

  1. In the left sidebar, click Settings near the bottom.
  2. In the Settings left rail, under Channels, click Channels.
  3. Find the Instagram & Messenger card and click Connect.
  4. You’ll be redirected to Facebook’s login page. Log in with the Facebook account that manages your Page.
  5. Review and grant the requested permissions:
    • Page messaging — allows the platform to read and send Messenger messages
    • Page management — allows the platform to access your Page information
    • Instagram messaging (optional) — also connects Instagram DMs if you have a connected Instagram account
  6. Select the Facebook Pages you want to connect and finish the authorization.

Tip: You can connect multiple Facebook Pages during the authorization flow, and choose which one is active on the Instagram & Messenger card afterward.

Page shows as “Previously shared” and can’t be ticked? That’s Meta remembering the Page was already granted to the app from an earlier connection (for example on another account or sub-account of yours). You don’t need to select it again: as long as the Page is linked to the Instagram account you pick, it comes through with it. Finish the flow and check the Instagram & Messenger card — the Page name should show as connected. If you’re moving a Page from one account to another, disconnect it on the old account first so messages only land in one place.

How Incoming Messages Are Handled

When someone sends a message to your Facebook Page through Messenger:

  1. Facebook automatically notifies the platform about the new message.
  2. The platform creates or updates the contact record for the sender.
  3. The message appears in Chats in real time.
  4. If an AI Agent is handling the conversation, it generates and sends a response automatically.
  5. Read receipts are tracked when you or the contact reads a message.

Supported Incoming Message Types

Message Type Supported
Text messages Yes
Images Yes — uploaded and stored securely
Videos Yes — uploaded and stored securely
Voice messages Yes — uploaded and stored securely
Documents / Files Yes — uploaded and stored securely
Shared links Yes — arrives as a message with the link’s title and address
Message deletions Detected and reflected in conversation
Read receipts Tracked for delivery status

Messages you send from Facebook’s own Page inbox (or Meta Business Suite) still appear in the app so your conversation history stays complete — and sending one there automatically pauses the AI for that contact, so it doesn’t talk over you. Only messages the AI itself sent are de-duplicated.

Note: Like Instagram, media files from Messenger have temporary links. The platform automatically saves copies of all photos, videos, and files so they remain accessible in your inbox long-term.

Setting Up an AI Agent for Messenger

  1. In the left sidebar, under AI STUDIO, click AI Agents and create or open an Agent.
  2. Give it instructions covering brand voice and how it should respond.
  3. Add relevant entries to the Knowledge Base — the set of articles and answers the AI draws on when replying.
  4. Set its active hours (24/7 or only outside business hours).
  5. Assign the Agent to Messenger as an Entry Point — that is what routes new Messenger conversations to it. See Entry Points and Moving from Campaigns to Broadcasts & Agents.

Comment Monitoring

The platform can monitor comments on your Facebook Page posts and respond automatically. This is a deep feature with its own dedicated guide — see Comment-to-DM Automation for Exact Text mode, reply variations, and the full credit breakdown. The steps below are the Messenger-specific path.

How It Works

  1. A user comments on one of your Facebook Page posts.
  2. The platform detects the comment automatically.
  3. The platform replies to the comment publicly (a short nudge) and opens a Messenger conversation with the commenter, where the AI Agent takes over.

Before You Start

Make sure your Facebook Page and Instagram account are linked together inside Meta Business Manager (business.facebook.com) before connecting. If only one of them shows up when you connect, click the + button in Business Manager to link the other. Comment-to-Messenger relies on this link being in place.

Setting Up Comment Monitoring

Comment monitoring is set up on the AI Agent that should answer, as a Facebook Comment Entry Point:

  1. In the main sidebar, under AI Studio, click AI Agents.
  2. Open the Agent you want to answer these conversations, or create one.
  3. Go to the Agent’s Entry Points tab and click New Entry Point.
  4. Choose Facebook Comment as the type. The channel is locked to Facebook (it must already show connected — see Connecting Messenger to the App above).
  5. Under Which posts, leave All posts selected to watch every post on your Page, or choose Specific posts, click Choose posts and tick the posts you want from the list — each shows its thumbnail, caption and date, so there is nothing to look up. Posts you pick appear under the button; click the x on one to remove it. If a post isn’t in the list (very old posts, or a post you only have the ID for), open Or paste post IDs and paste its Post ID, one per line (see Finding a Post ID below).
  6. Add one or more Comment keywords (for example: checklist). The platform uses smart matching, so one clean keyword is enough — you don’t need typos or plural forms. Leave the field empty and every comment on the watched posts gets a message.
  7. Choose the First response: AI lets the Agent write both the public comment reply and the first Messenger message, or Exact text sends wording you write yourself — a Public comment reply and a First DM message, each of which can hold several variations so repeated replies don’t look copy-pasted. Exact text costs 0 credits; see Comment-to-DM Automation for the full comparison.
  8. Optionally set a delay in minutes before the public reply and the message go out, so it looks more natural.
  9. Toggle the Entry Point Enabled, click Save, and Publish the Agent.

When someone comments one of your keywords on a monitored post, the platform replies to the comment publicly and opens a Messenger conversation with that person — the AI Agent then handles the follow-up just like any other chat.

Only new comments trigger automations. Comment edits and deletions are ignored.

Finding a Post ID

You only need this if a post doesn’t show up in the Choose posts list. The Post ID is not the post’s URL:

  1. Open Meta Business Suite (business.facebook.com).
  2. Go to Content in the left sidebar.
  3. Find the post you want to monitor and click its three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Copy Post ID and paste it into the entry point.

Tip: Comment-to-Messenger automation works well for lead generation. A typical post might say “Comment ‘INFO’ to get the free guide” — the platform replies to the comment and sends the guide via Messenger automatically, and the AI keeps the conversation going from there.

Message Types Supported for Outgoing

Message Type Supported
Text messages Yes
Images Yes
Videos Yes
Documents Yes

Note: Like all Meta messaging channels, you can only respond to users who have messaged your Page first. You cannot initiate new Messenger conversations with users who have never contacted your Page — a Meta platform policy to prevent spam.

24-hour window. Facebook only lets you message a contact for 24 hours after their last message to you. This applies to existing conversations too — if 24 hours pass with no new message from the contact, your next reply or follow-up won’t be delivered until they message you again. When this happens the message shows as failed, with the reason shown on the message in the chat.

This matters most for follow-ups. When you schedule a follow-up on a Messenger or Instagram chat, the app checks the window for you:

  • If the contact has already been quiet for more than 24 hours, scheduling is blocked and the dialog tells you why — the message could not be delivered anyway.
  • If the window is still open, you’ll see how long is left, so you can tell whether “follow up in 2 days” will actually land.

Automatic follow-ups follow the same rule: if the window has closed by the time one is due, it is skipped rather than sent and failed. If a lead has gone cold on Messenger for over a day, reach them on another channel instead. Instagram DMs work the same way; WhatsApp Business lets you reopen a closed window with an approved template, and WhatsApp Web has no window at all.

Troubleshooting

Facebook Page Not Appearing After Connection

  • Verify you are logged in with a Facebook account that has admin access to the Page.
  • Ensure the Facebook Page is published (not in draft/unpublished state).
  • Check that you selected the Page during the Facebook login and authorization step.
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting through Settings → Channels → Channels → Instagram & Messenger.

Not Receiving Incoming Messages

  • Confirm your Agent/Entry Point for Messenger is active.
  • Send a test message from a personal Facebook account to your Page via Messenger.
  • Verify the Page is connected in Settings.
  • Check that no other chatbot or automation app is still connected to the Page. Facebook delivers incoming messages to only one app at a time. Remove any other app at business.facebook.com → Business Settings → Apps / connected business integrations for the Page. A tell-tale sign is a generic auto-reply still going out that doesn’t match your AI Agent’s voice.
  • If everything looks connected but messages still aren’t coming in, disconnect and reconnect the Page. In rare cases Facebook shows the Page as connected while it has silently stopped delivering messages. Reconnecting through Settings → Channels → Instagram & Messenger forces a fresh connection and restores delivery. Facebook never re-delivers old messages: anything received while delivery was broken stays in your Facebook Page inbox and needs to be answered there, but all new messages will reach the platform normally.

AI Not Responding

  • Check that an Entry Point covers this channel and that your agent has been published. Open the Agent, confirm it has an Entry Point for Messenger, and use Publish so the changes are live — an agent left unpublished does not answer real messages, no matter how complete the setup looks.
  • Confirm the Agent is active and its active hours include the current time.
  • Verify the contact is routed to the correct Agent.
  • Check your credit balance — AI responses require credits.
  • Did you reply from Messenger yourself? Replying to a conversation from the Messenger app or the Meta Business Suite inbox automatically pauses the AI on that one conversation, so it does not talk over you. Open the chat in Chats and use the toggle at the top — it reads “AI paused” when the AI is off, and selecting it turns the AI back on.

Comments Not Being Detected

  • Check the Facebook Comment Entry Point is enabled and the Agent is published. Open the Agent, go to its Entry Points tab, confirm the rule is toggled Enabled, and use Publish — an Agent left unpublished does not react to comments.
  • If the Entry Point watches Specific posts, confirm the post people are commenting on is in the rule’s selected posts.
  • If you set comment monitoring up on a classic campaign instead, check that campaign is Live and not Draft. A campaign you built but never launched stays in Draft and does not react to comments: open it, go to the Launch step at the end, and select Launch campaign.
  • If issues persist, try disconnecting and reconnecting your Facebook Page.
  • Check that the comment matches your configured trigger keywords (if you enabled keyword filtering).
  • Only new comments trigger automations — comment edits are not detected.

Messages or Follow-Ups Failing to Send

  • Check when the contact last messaged you. Facebook blocks anything sent more than 24 hours after the contact’s last message — see the 24-hour window note above. This is the most common cause of a Messenger message failing, and it is a Facebook rule rather than a setting in the app.
  • The failure reason is shown on the message itself in Chats — open the conversation and select the failed message’s status to see what Facebook returned.
  • If you get a “failed to send” email notification for several contacts at once, check whether they all went quiet more than a day ago. Messages to contacts still inside the 24-hour window go out normally.
  • Scheduling a follow-up now warns you up front when the window has closed, so this should no longer take you by surprise.

“Permissions Error” During Connection

  • Make sure you are logging in with the Facebook account that has admin access to the Meta Business account.
  • Verify that your Facebook Page is in good standing with no policy violations.
  • Re-authorize the connection and make sure to grant all requested permissions.

Best Practices

  • Respond promptly. Facebook tracks your Page’s response time and displays it publicly. Fast AI-powered responses help maintain a good response rate badge.
  • Set up a thorough Knowledge Base so the AI can handle the most common questions without human intervention.
  • Use comment monitoring strategically to convert post engagement into Messenger conversations.
  • Keep conversations relevant. Only message users about topics related to why they contacted your Page.
  • Monitor conversations regularly. Review AI responses to ensure quality and step in when human interaction is needed.
  • Respect user preferences. If a user asks to stop receiving messages, honor their request immediately.
